About

8.3 billion civilians. Each a star system.

Picture them on the Earth. Each person gives off a weather of their own. Some of us you barely notice unless you stand close. Some people are louder than you can hear.

Orbit is one person. This page is what happens when you refuse to stop there.

Before anyone speaks

The front door. Keys in the bowl. You know the weather before a word. The shoulders are up, or they are not. The bag hits the chair too hard. The dog is already on its feet, tags ticking once against the bowl. A jaw does a small thing. Eyes find the sink instead of you.

None of that is extra information added after the fact. You do not see a body and then decode it like a chart. You are already in the room with the meaning. The meaning is how the body arrives.

Watch the gap. Some people stop in the doorway and leave a whole body-width of air. Some come to the sink and stand one step inside the place you cook, close enough that you can smell the day on their coat. The couch grows a valley: two phones, two sets of knees pointed at opposite walls, a cushion that might as well be a fence. A child hovers at the edge of the rug and will not cross it. Distance is already a sentence. How near they come is how much field they are willing to share.

Then the leak. The mouth arrives at a smile a fraction late. Something flashes across the face and is gone before you could swear to it: fear, heat, a flinch in the eyelid. The voice stays bright. The hands do not. A mug is turned in a full circle. A thumbnail finds a chip in the bench. The truth got out through a smaller door than the one they meant to use.

And the silence, when it comes, is not empty. The fridge starts up. A tap lets one drop go. Someone swallows. Chair wood answers a shift of weight. Outside, a car takes the corner and the sound thins away. The dog’s claws tick, then stop. You can hear your own blood in your ears if you let it get that quiet. A pause one beat too long has a temperature. It sits on the skin. A laugh that does not reach the eyes leaves the air slightly colder. A child goes quiet at the exact moment the adults get bright, and the quiet has a shape. You could not quote it later. You could point to where it stood.

That is most of Human 2. Not the speech. The alien system walking in, choosing a distance, already radiating, already leaking, already pulling on yours. You recognise the names on their moons. You do not recognise the weather.

You never get the back of the apple

Hold an apple. You get this side, the weight, the shine. The far side is there, and you believe it, and you still cannot see it at the same time. Turn it and you lose the first face. Another person is like that, except they keep turning on their own.

You get a halo. Face, tone, the way they take up a doorway. Stand closer and the grain gets finer. You still do not become them. Their private orbit keeps going behind the eyes, in the car on the way home, at three in the morning when the house is dark.

Some people will tell you entanglement is only for particles, or that star signs are a handed-down story, or that the universe-as-hologram is a poster. Fine. We are not selling a church. We are talking about two bodies in one kitchen.

People who stare at black holes have a version of the same limit: what you can know of the inside seems to live on the surface. The human version is ordinary. Demand that your inner life stay sealed and that they still receive all of you, and the edge burns. Sit four people at dinner and nobody is equally open to all three others. A long lock with one person costs something with the rest. That is not a moral. It is how a room actually feels.

When a sentence finally leaves

Then someone speaks. The sentence is gone from you. It is happening in them now, mixed with whatever their face already let out. Same words, new weather. Often the words are the cover. The leak was earlier. A look can still do the whole job without them. So can the story you tell yourself about the look, which they may never hear.

After twenty years some of those crossings stay drawn. The fight is over. The line is still there in the way two mugs get put down. Kind in you meets unsure in them. The name of that mix belongs to both of you.

Look at Orbit. The black between the moons is not empty. That is where the reaction lives. Look at the Atlas. Feelings come in grains, not a smear. A nod, a flinch, a held breath. Small pieces. Real weight.

The Cross you cannot see

Stand in a backyard here and the Southern Cross is just there. Tell that to someone who grew up under a northern sky and they have to take your word. Same night. Different lights on the menu.

Where you are standing changes what the night means. It also changes what you can see at all. The other person’s field is like that. From your chair you get one face of the apple. From theirs, you are the far side. Both of you are sure you are looking at the same room.

Close up, one person is a whole sky. From the hallway, four people are one weather. Same evening. Different doorway.

The question you can ask in a short talk

Start with one person. The whole weather. The dog on the seat. Then say: and here is someone else, already in the doorway, shoulders telling the truth before the mouth does. Human 2. An alien system. They have your words for feeling. None of the amounts are yours. What happens in the air between them?

Ask it again at the table. Ask it again in the room. Ask it again under the actual sky. The question stays put. There are just more bodies in it.

  1. 01

    The jewel

    Man Solo

You, on your own. One head. The whole weather going on in there. A man on the road with the dog on the seat. That is the first picture. It is already a lot.

  2. 02

    The alien

    Human 2 · alien system

Someone sits down opposite. Not a twin. An alien system: they have Kind and Hurt too, just never in your amounts. First contact is the dirty air, and it starts before anyone speaks.

  3. 03

    The house

    Three, then four

Kitchen table. Two parents, two kids, or whatever your four is. You cannot track every mood. You can feel the weather in the middle of the table.

  4. 04

    The room

    About ten

A gathering. A few people leaning in. One person quiet at the edge. You pick someone and their whole field comes back. The rest go back to being lights.

  5. 05

    The dome

    A local sky

Step outside. In the south you get the Cross. Up north you do not. Same night. Different window. That is already enough to humble a theory.

  6. 06

    Outside the dome

    The one brew

Keep going and the bowl was never the end. Every kitchen, every pair, every quiet person at the edge is happening in the same mix. The picture repeats. It does not close.

Leave it open

Are the four, the ten, and the 8.3 billion all happening inside one person’s sky? Or, further out, are we all in the same one?

That last move is a zoom, not a chart. Kitchen. Table. Room. Night. Then further. In Orbit, Vessel is the example: Inner is one skull, Combined is four in the tissue, Outer is the crowd as neurons. It still will not say whose brain it is.

Orbit is still one person. The second person waits until that first collision is obvious. Philosophy is the short form.
